Recalcitrant Materialities of a Liminal Ocean: Deconstructing the ‘Arctic Nomos’

چکیده
Published in 1950, Carl Schmitt’s Nomos of the Earth has been one most influential contributions legal theory, illustrating inter alia territorial conceptualization Eurocentric global order. While Earth’s nomos largely hinged on constructed ontology a land-sea dichotomy and appropriation division space through establishment sovereignty upon it, this article contends that particular geomorphology Arctic seascape, multiscalar dynamics politics, rapid pace change region render spatial order rather intricate may challenge existing application state sovereignty. After critically deconstructing process territorialization Ocean, delves into three conceptual challenges – ontological, epistemological, technological respectively pertinent to juridical imaginary ‘Arctic ’ engraved by sovereignty, seeks expose limits regime place.

The Arctic Ocean Spices Up
The contemporary Arctic Ocean differs markedly from midlatitude, ice-free, and relatively warm oceans in the context of density-compensating temperature and salinity variations. These variations are invaluable tracers in the midlatitudes, revealing essential fundamental physical processes of the oceans, on scales from millimeters to thousands of kilometers. However, in the cold Arctic Ocean, te...
متن کاملPan-Arctic distributions of continental runoff in the Arctic Ocean
Continental runoff is a major source of freshwater, nutrients and terrigenous material to the Arctic Ocean. As such, it influences water column stratification, light attenuation, surface heating, gas exchange, biological productivity and carbon sequestration. Increasing river discharge and thawing permafrost suggest that the impacts of continental runoff on these processes are changing. Here, a...
متن کاملThe phenology of Arctic Ocean surface warming
In this work, we explore the seasonal relationships (i.e., the phenology) between sea ice retreat, sea surface temperature (SST), and atmospheric heat fluxes in the Pacific Sector of the Arctic Ocean, using satellite and reanalysis data. We find that where ice retreats early in most years, maximum summertime SSTs are usually warmer, relative to areas with later retreat. For any particular year,...
